Minutes from the Farragut Band Boosters Meetings

FHS Band Boosters Meeting – July 20, 2004

Boosters’ President Jim Johnson opened the boosters’ meeting, introduced himself and welcomed everyone.

Director’s Remarks by Steve Taylor: Mr. Rogers was busy at the marching practice and was unable to attend.

Mr. Taylor spoke to the group. This year’s staff of directors is: Ron Rogers, Steve Taylor, Michelle Lewis, Mr. Rector, Mr. Danner, Valerie Sanders, Kathy Sullivan, Steven Rogers, Mr. Hunter, and Jared Harold. There are approximately 235 members in the band.

Four competitions (one local and three out of town) are scheduled for October and November. One possible competition will be in Panama City, FL.

Everyone is encouraged to go to the band’s web site—www.farragutband.org. It is updated with game schedule, competition dates, audition and clinic dates. It is a good source of information.

Mr. Taylor invited everyone to attend the BBQ on Friday, July 30. It is a great time and will be followed by a preview of about 7 minutes of the new marching band show.

The directors promote private musical instruction and will compile a list of instructors.

If your student has not yet signed up for concert season band (second term), please encourage him to do so. Concert season is as much fun as marching season.

Mr. Taylor asked for all parents to get involved with the band.

This year’s show is called “Letters to Home.” It is an emotional show that tells the story, through letters, as a soldier enters the Civil War. Some students will dress in the current gray uniform jackets and some will wear the previous years’ blue jackets. In addition to many different songs, letters will be read to narrate the story.

Mr. Taylor said the band room has new carpeting and paint.

Meeting minutes: Jim Whitaker motioned to accept the minutes as written, Joan DeTar seconded, and the minutes were accepted.

Treasurer: Tracy Sawyer presented the 2004-2005 budget as approved by the Executive Board. She also emphasized that a “Request for Reimbursement” form will be required in the future, and it must include a receipt, an authorized signature, and a reason for the expense. The quickest way to receive your reimbursement is by mail; therefore, include your mailing address on the request.

President’s Remarks by Jim Johnson: Jim Johnson introduced the Executive Board Officers and Committee Chairpersons, and he gave a description of their duties. He also explained that the band has a lot of expenses coming mostly from taking seven buses, two equipment trucks and a trailer to away games and competitions.

Call for Volunteers: The band needs volunteers. Parents can return their volunteer list directly by accessing “volunteer” at www.farragutband.org web site and/or sending it to the Volunteer Coordinator, Lynda Johnson.

Parent Polo Shirts: Joan DeTar showed the new parent polo shirt. The polo shirt can be worn year after year. It is navy blue with an embroidered Farragut Band insignia on the front. The cost is $22.00. If ordered by July 26, then the shirts will ready for the first home game. The order form is on the band web site. Caps and visors are also available.

Head Chaperone: Janice Moore announced a need for parents, who would like to chaperone 40-50 kids on a bus, to volunteer to chaperone. There will be a meeting later to go over details. Janice said that she handles the medical information sheets and stressed their importance.

Anchor Jewelry: Janice Moore stated that she sells nice anchor-designed jewelry as a fund-raiser for the band.

Barbecue: Kathy Matuszak reminded everyone to turn in their BBQ ticket orders. The meal is great and is followed by the preview of the band’s new show.

Football Season Tickets: Maria Gomez asked people to turn in their season pass orders. Families will save $5/season ticket if they plan to attend all five home games. They can pick up their tickets at the BBQ, or they can send a self-addressed stamped envelope.

Uniforms: Marie Johnson was unable to attend the meeting; however, Tom Johnson advised the group that for every uniform cleaned at Concord Cleaners, the band receives a $2.00 donation. Be sure to turn in the white dry-cleaning receipt to the blue tub for the donation. Pam Maddox, Corresponding Secretary, confirmed that the new owners of Concord Cleaners are invited to the BBQ. Band Land uniform accessory prices are:

Marching Shoes $29.95
Suspenders $5.95
Long-wristed Gloves $3.00

Band Video: Brandon Campbell announced that he will sell last year’s band video for $13 at the BBQ. He is unable to offer a DVD version because it is too expensive. If people have their own video footage to share, they can give it to Mr. Campbell for use in this year’s tape.

Band Dance: Dinah Bates said that the band dance will be on Thursday, July 29, and will include refreshments of pizza, cookies and drinks. All students are encouraged to come. Chaperones are needed.

Student T-shirts: Lynda Johnson needs volunteers to distribute t-shirts at the band dance.

Kroger Commitment Card: Cindy Whitaker explained that Kroger will donate $300 to the band for every $750,000 spent at their stores. Since the card is honored at Kroger stores in contiguous states, people can send them to relatives to use.

Need for Volunteers: Jim Johnson said there is a need for people to learn jobs now for next year’s band, i.e. Treasurer and Band Camp Coordinator. Still needed this year are Class Representatives for 9th and 11th grades.

Jim Whitaker motioned to adjourn the meeting; Pam Maddox seconded. Jim Johnson closed the FHS Band Boosters’ meeting for July 20, 2004.
