Re: All State-East Auditions

Auditions for this year’s All State-East Senior Band & Orchestra Clinic will be held Saturday, January 12, 2008 at South-Doyle High School. You may send as many students grades 10-12 to try out as you wish. Please take a second to look over the information below as some policies have changed in the past few years. All of the policies will be enforced to assure consistency. The All State-East Clinic will be held on Feb. 7-9, 2008 at the Park Vista Hotel, Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

School Auditions Lists

Wind Instrument Audition Requirements
  1. Scales will be memorized and performed on a pass/fail basis. Wind students will begin their audition in their respective scale room. A student not passing the scales portion of the audition will not be allowed to continue.
  2. Students passing the scale portion of the audition will be awarded up to 200 points per judge - 20% of their total score.
  3. Prepared and Sight reading will each be worth 400 points per judge for a total of a possible 2000 points.
  4. 200 points - scales (20%)
    400 points - prepared (40%)
    400 points - sight reading (40%)
  5. Scales will be performed in complete octaves. Time and minimum range requirements will remain the same.
  6. The student’s audition ends if the scale portion is not played in the accepted time. The student must pass the scale portion of the audition to proceed to the Prepared and Sight-Reading parts of the audition. The student will have three minutes to satisfactorily complete the scale requirements. (as voted on at the fall 2005 General Meeting)
  7. Scale performance will be adjudicated using the following rubric:

    160 - 200 points 120 - 159 points 80 - 119 points 40 - 79 points 0 - 39 points
    Student performs all scales at tempo faster than the minimum requirements; student goes beyond minimum range requirements on every scale possible on their respective instrument. Student performs the majority of their scales going beyond the minimum requirements of range and tempo. Student meets the minimum scale requirements of range and tempo. Student meets the minimum scale requirements with few or minor range or technical issues. Student meets the minimum scale requirements with range or technical issues on a minority of scales, but it is evident student knows all 13 required scales.

  9. Students who cannot perform all 13 required scales fail the scales portion of the audition, and may not complete the audition.
  10. Tone quality may be addressed within the scope of the 40 points per descriptor.
  11. Prepared music for 2008 is #2

Percussion Audition Requirements

  1. Preparation of the 26 standard snare rudiment.
  2. Prepared etude for all three instruments, snare, mallet, and timpani.
  3. Timpani tuning.
  4. Mallet scales.
  5. Sight Reading for all three instruments.

String Audition Requirements

  1. Scale requirements are major scales (C through 5 sharps and 5 flats) and melodic minor scales (A through 4 sharps and 4 flats). Students will demonstrate one scale at quarter note = 60 and one scale at quarter note= 120. Scales performed three octaves will receive a maximum of 125 points while scales performed two octaves will receive a maximum of 100 points. String scales should not be slurred and must be from memory.
  2. Prepared material is Number ONE from the string rotation of music.
  3. Sight Reading.
